 1. What were you asked to make

As a class we got given 3 tasks to complete. Each task was different but all involved working in After Effects. Our first task was to use After Effects and follow a tutorial on YouTube which was a tutorial on how to create a simple cinematic trailer. I followed the tutorial step by step, copying everything the creator was doing to make sure it looks as close as possible to the tutorial. Our second task was again to use After Effect and follow a YouTube tutorial, this time the tutorial was to create a UFO flying over the city with 'BREAKING NEWS' banner on it. Same as before, I made sure I copied this tutorial step by step and paid close attention to each step he was doing to make sure my video looks just as good. Finally, our last task was again another After Effect YouTube tutorial. This time the tutorial was to make a barrel be on fire with a person behind this. With this one we also at the end had the choice to have a go at it ourself without a tutorial as we got given footage of someones hand and were given the choice to try and animate so that the hand is on fire.

2. How might this be useful to making your own title sequence

In my opinion the reason why some of this might be useful in my own title sequence is that I have learnt 3 separate skills from this task and have multiple of choice to choose from when it comes to creating my own title sequence, I also now have the ability to try and implement all 3 skills into 1 title sequence.

3. Which font did you use, why

For the trailer cinematic I used the following font 'AZONIX' and 'BankGothic'. The reason I used these fonts is that they were the ones that were used in the tutorial and I wanted my work to be as close to the tutorial as possible so I thought using the same font would be the best option and also I think this font suits the whole theme really well.

For the flying UFO over the city video I used the following font 'Arial', the reason why I used this font is because it was the one showed in the tutorial and my aim was to have my work to be as close as possible to the tutorial so that I would get the best possible outcome and the best look.

4. How might a different font/look suit a different audience/film genre

In my opinion, the font used needs to suit and fit the genre of the film and the audience as it wouldn't make sense to have a robotic font not in a sc-fi movie, or not having a bloody and bold font in a horror movie. Whatever font you use, it needs to be suitable and needs to look good with the genre as it will give a lot better look and feel to the movie. Also if you use the correct font it will also grab more attention from the audience and will create a better mood in the film.

5. Did you need any help? If so, who did you turn to - peer/teacher/google etc?

Or did you solve it yourself with some playing around?

Throughout the whole of the 3 tasks we got set I didn't require help in any of them, the reason for it personally is because we were following a tutorial on YouTube so we were getting told step by step what to do and how to do it, so it was hard to do something wrong and then not know how to do. I also didn't run into any issues with completing the tasks and found it pretty easy as the tutorials were really well detailed and each step was explained really well.

6. What did you learn

I've learnt a bit of each skill from each task. From task 1 I learned how to create a cinematic trailer and how to create cool effects, for example make the text get closer to each other as the time goes on. From the fire task I learned how to create a realistic fire effect, also how to create a glow on the character so that it makes the fire even more realistic and how to mask and trace something to something else, for example the fire to the barrel. From the flying UFO task I learned how to make a UFO look realistic over the city by changing the colours and making the opacity a bit lower, I also had to create the feel that the UFO is leaving space and had to add a shake the whole clip so it looked a lot more realistic.

7. Detail 2-3 AE skills that you learned and how-tos that are transferrable to other projects

eg how to pre-compose and why this might be useful

When creating these projects I learnt a few new skills from each project. From the cinematic trailer I learnt how to make the text expand and move whilst the time goes on, before learning this skill I thought that it is something a lot more difficult than it turned out to be. The skill I learned from the UFO project was how to make a UFO look more realistic over a city by changing the colours and the opacity of it, I also learnt how to animate it so that it looks like the UFO is actually flying up from the city and make it look realistic and not fake. From the final project, which was the Barrel fire, in this project I learnt how to create a barrel on fire and make it look realistic, I did this by mask tracing the fire to the barrel so that when the camera moves the fire is in the correct position all the time, I also had to change the colours and add glow to the person behind the fire so that it looked a lot more realistic.

8. Watch some varied title sequences and choose three to map out on Illustrator or Photoshop, on a timeline (I will explain this one!)
