 TITLE SEQUENCE RESEARCH

1.Detail at least two elements from your first chosen documentary that has aided you in constructing your initial ideas.

Detail how these ideas will be utilised to engage and excite a target audience. Use information around audience types.

Documentary 1.

One thing that I like from The Walking Dead title sequence is the old western feel from the stained paper background. I will try and possibly recreate this in my own by either creating my own stained paper or using footage online, it won’t be to hard to make I will just need to learn how to edit it in, in my sequence.

I also like how the images turn from real images to comic and animated images and this is something I will defiantly try and recreate as it creates a really nice look to the while sequence and makes it stand out for sure.

 Documentary 2.

From the title sequence of ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’ I liked how simple it was with shapes and lines coming onto the screen and displaying each crew member and other important people that took part in the film, this is something I might cry and create but make it more exciting and add something to it so it’s not so plain and simple.

in a feature by Dan Perri he said he was influenced by other graphic designers and decided to create his own version.

    INTIAL IDEAS

a)   In my opinion the reason why my target audience will enjoy my title sequence is because it will be really simple and straight to the point, what I mean by this is that I will try to not have a lot of things going on at once in each shot as that will be overwhelming to my target audience, I will also try not to include to bold of colours. I will try my best to convey each theme that is in the show in the title sequence and also try my best to show what the series is about from the title sequence. I will try and create a title sequence that is unique from other and through that I will hope that my target audience will get drawn into it rather than other title sequences.

b)   From the title sequence, my target audience will learn a lot about the show, my main aim is to create a title sequence where I introduce all main characters from the show and will also try to possibly show what their role is in the show (E.G police officer wearing a police uniform). I aim to also present to the target audience what the series is about. I will try my best to achieve this by including some shots that will give the viewers a brief idea of what to expect in the show.

c)   In an intro, many factors can contribute to conveying the appropriate image and meaning to the audience. The connotation, which gives additional content associated with a given word, item etc. In my intro, this could be done by having sports car that can be associated with racing, speeding, action. Symbolism, which is based on giving a certain thing a deeper meaning could be found in a weapon that would symbolise a shooting, a riot, i.e. that an action is taking place. The denotation could be the music and the font used which would show the prevailing atmosphere, feeling and impressions

d)   The way the title sequence connects to genre, theme and story of the TV show is that I will make sure that each theme I try to portray I will make sure that it is clear and is easy to understand and see by the target audience. I will also do the same with genre and story of the TV show, this will be the main thing I focus on and it is the most important factor to making a successful title sequence. The way it will be clear to the audience Is that I will include images/videos of certain scenarios that are in the TV show or will include certain clips I recorded that will represent the themes and genre.

    Target Audience

For my title sequence, I will focus on targeting it for people that aged between 16-25 as I think it be the most effective and successful in reaching young teens/young adults. The gender that I aim at will be all genders; male female transgender etc. As my series isn't gender specific and doesn't focus on only one gender. I will also focus on targeting it on people that also enjoy watching action/crime series and have watched previous series like Bodyguard. I will try and aim it at one specific type of audience and that would be the fans and lovers of action crime films and series as I think they are the best people to aim for as my series has the same genres and will drag them into watching and grab their interest if they see a new action crime series coming out. I will also try and aim it at people that like problem solving as that is also something that my series will include. I try and aim it at people that have the same interest as genres and scenarios in my series. My focus will also be, at other terrorists causing such destructions and taking lives, to try and show the that they are only really destroying themselves. I will try and show them the damage they do and to change their mind and perspective on what they do.

BRIEF

The look I will going for in my title sequence is a dark and punchy look, I want each shot and transition to be unique and have some sort of importance to the title sequence. I will try my best to minimize the use of any bright colours as that won’t suit the whole title sequence as the series is about crime, action and problem solving. My title sequence will fit in with my target audience as it will be targeted at younger adults that enjoy watching crime series and also like watching action series as this is what my series will be full off, also in the title sequence there will be hints off action and crime.

When it comes to colours, throughout my whole title sequence I will try and eliminate the use of any bright colours as that won’t fit in with my genre and the theme of the series. I will aim to stick to dark colours that will help me convey the theme and genre of the series.

Throughout my whole title sequence, I won’t require my actors to dress up in some fancy costumes and I also won’t need a lot of it in my title sequence. I will need 1 actor to dress in some sort of black outfit (could be suit, tracksuit or just a casual all black fit) this will be the main character. The other actors that I will have I will need them to just dress normal as their role in the series isn’t highly important. With the other actors that will be dressed in normal clothes I will want them to at least have some modern clothes on, as my target audience is young adults so I will want them to wear clothes that my target audience also wear or like the look of.

My title sequence I will try and set in the city, I will need to get b roll of the city possibly from the city centre or from a high point. I will also need a green screen for some of my shots as I want to cut out the person and put him on another background. Some of my other shots and settings, I will need to use from the internet as I won’t have access to them and even creating them. The way that my settings will link to my target audience is that I try and aim it at young adults living mainly in the city so, them seeing something that they can connect to and have some sort of attachment too might draw them into watching it.

Technical Proposal

a)  What are the digital effects and art style to be used in creating your title sequence? How will this engage an audience?

When it comes to creating my title sequence I will use a couple of digital effect to achieve my final piece.

The major one I will use is double exposure. I will be using this in some of shots to add a better story telling to the shot, so that my audience can learn a bit more in a shorter amount of time. My main goal with this effect Is to tell as much about my show in as little time as possible so that my audience get a feeling of what they will be watching. By having this effect it will also allow the audience to get a feeling of what they will be watching and also won't bore the audience that quick as it won't be a long tiring title sequence with loads of different shots and actions.

Another effect I will use is some sort of particle effect that will be flying about the screen in each shot. I will also use an effect where I have police lights with sirens on the screen, to help portray the theme of mystery and danger as that is what police could be associated  withUsing this effect will add more detail to the shot, the way this will engage with the audience is that it will help portray the theme of mystery and danger as you could link the particles to being particles flying of the bomb that exploded which will help show the theme of danger.

I will also be using a green screen effect where I will add some sort of mathematical equations to help show that the  character is thinking. I will be using at least 2 green screen effects. The way the mathematical effect will help with engaging with the audience is that it will make the audience question and think about what the character could be thinking about and why is it so important, this will keep the audience eager to figure out what it is and will make them continue watching.

b)  What is the title sequence trying to convey and how does it connect to a target audience?

In my title sequence the one thing I will be conveying the theme of mystery and danger to the audience. The way I will convey these themes is by using shots that have action that can relate to each theme. For example for danger I will have a bomb explosion or a crime scene shot - both of which can be linked to the theme of danger. The way this will connect with the target audience is that it will introduce the things the like and are interested in, early on instead of waiting until the series begin, like films with crime in them or some sort of danger and action. Introducing it extremely early will not only draw the attention of my audience a lot quicker but it will keep them dragged in the series more too as they have seen something they like and are interested in.

One other major thing that my target audience is trying to convey is mainly focused at people behind all these major attacks and people planning on creating more, also known as terrorists. My title sequence is going to convey that doing these attacks only destroys the person doing it, and shows the consequences of doing them. Mainly, trying to show how bad it is doing such things and also the damage it has on other people and trying to change the mind and thoughts of doing it again.

Along with using shots to introduce themes, I will in some shots use props to do the same thing and introduce themes that are in the series and make my audience aware of them early on to keep them attach and connected in the series.

c)  How will the visual effects work to create a dynamic and visually arresting title sequence for a target audience?

The way that my visual effects will work in my title sequence is that I will make sure that each of my effects are clean and well edited so that the audience can have get a clear understanding of what is going on. My target audience are also people that like simplistic and minimalistic things and that is what I am aiming to achieve not only in my title sequence but also in my visual effects, what I mean by that is, with any of my effects I will avoid having too many things going on in the shot, I will try and minimise it to no more than 3 things going on as well as I will avoid using bold and flashy colours as that is not what my target audience would like to see.

d)  What materials will you need?

In my title sequence I won't be using a lot of materials as my idea uses mainly editing software to get the final look. The main material I will use is a green screen as I have some shots where I need to use it and then cut out my character.

Another prop I might be using but not to sure yet, will be images of 'suspects' that I will hang on the board. These images link to the questioning who is the criminal behind all the attacks that happen in the series, the way this will engage with the audience is that already from early on they can start to make their first guesses on who the criminal could be. This will be effective as it engages the audience with the series in some way.

f)   What technical equipment will be used? e.g. Cameras, visual effects software, etc.

When it comes to technical equipment, I will be using lots of different ones as that is how I will achieve my title sequence and the look I want. The main equipment I will be using is a camera and editing software like premiere pro and after effect. I will be using the camera for obvious reason, I will need to record shots that I have planned and I will need to use a camera for that. When it coms to the editing software, I will need to use these for put all my clips together but also to possibly create some effects like adding text and some visual effects to the editing so that it makes the final result look a lot better. I might also need to use a lighting kit when using a greenscreen or when I want to get a specific lighting in my shot I could use a light kit to achieve this.

g)  How will you ensure that your title sequence’s genre, theme and story is clear to understand for a target audience in relation to the visual effects and TV show itself.

When it comes to creating a clear title sequence where the genre theme and story are easy to understand that is my main focus when making my one. I will make sure each shot, each prop and each action has a clear link to a theme, genre or story of the series. I will avoid using and creating a shots that don't link to any of the themes or genre in the series as well a I will avoid using and creating shots that don't show a clear theme or genre. For example, I will use shots of a crime scene to clearly portray the theme of danger and the genre of crime. I will also ensure that the themes and genre I try and show to my target audience are ones that they also are interested in and like. I will also use characters as another way of conveying a clear understanding of a theme and/or genre, for example using a hooded mysterious figure to portray the theme of mystery.
